For more than 25 years, David and his spouse relied on Barclays Bank to look after their savings. As long-standing customers and retirees, they trusted the bank to keep their money safe and to protect them from financial threats.

But while exploring new ways to invest for their future, David was caught in a highly convincing impersonation scam.

How the Scam Worked

David received an unexpected phone call from someone claiming to represent a well-known financial institution. The scammers used the real name of a genuine banker and directed him to a professional-looking website, making the offer appear completely authentic.

Speaking confidently and using expert-sounding language, the fraudsters presented David with what seemed like attractive investment opportunities, including 11% Societe Generale Bonds and 7% Tesco Bonds. Wanting to make a positive financial decision, David was convinced to share personal details such as his National Insurance number, bank account information and driving licence.

Reassured by how credible the callers appeared, David went ahead and made several large transfers through his Barclays account, believing he was securing his family’s future.

The Turning Point

When David did not receive his expected investment statement, he began to worry. The scammers stopped responding altogether. Concerned, David contacted the genuine financial institution directly — only to learn there was no record of any investments in his name.

The Impact

Losing £193,000 was devastating. The financial loss was significant, but the emotional impact was equally severe. David and his spouse felt shocked, betrayed and shaken, especially after placing their trust in both the scammers and the systems they believed would protect them. Their confidence in the safety of their finances was deeply affected.
