HR Apprentice, Megan and Events Management Apprentice, Evie write about their respective experiences completing an apprenticeship at CEL Solicitors.
We both joined CEL Solicitors as apprentices in 2023 after we discovered that university was not for us. As practical learners, we much prefer on-the-job experience and feel as though we can gain more knowledge in our fields through working.
We complete our apprenticeships during working hours (9AM – 5PM) and are given six hours a week ‘off the job’ to complete vocational learning which contributes to our qualification.
We have thoroughly enjoyed our journey with CEL Solicitors so far as the firm has supported our goals and allowed us to grow as individuals.
HR Apprentice, Megan
I am completing a HR apprenticeship which will result in a Level 3 CIPD qualification, which is equivalent to two A-levels. I plan to progress further by completing my Level 5 CIPD.
At CEL, we refer to our HR department as our ‘People Team’, as our main goal is ensuring that we prioritise the wellbeing of our people by creating a healthy working environment.
Apprenticeships are an amazing opportunity that allow for career progression. By the time I have completed my Level 5 I will have gained 4 years of relevant experience in HR on the job.
Events Management Apprentice, Evie
I am completing an Events Management apprenticeship which will result in a Level 3 qualification. Once I complete my apprenticeship, I will have a lot of opportunities to further my career, such as completing a Level 5 apprenticeship in PR & Social Media.
Being an apprentice is a really enriching experience. Most courses last between only 12-18 months, whereas university courses are typically 3-4 years long.
The opportunities that are given to me to expand my knowledge are truly rewarding. In my day-to-day, I will attend meetings, plan both internal and external events, work on projects, and manage budgets.
A typical day for Megan and Evie
8:30: In the morning, we will grab a piece of toast or a bagel for breakfast from the local shop.
9:00: Once we arrive at the office, we respond to any emails and complete tasks to prepare for the day ahead, such as setting up meeting rooms or welcoming external visitors.
10:00 We will complete our apprenticeship work which contributes to our weekly six hours of learning.
12:00: Lunch time! After being in the office all morning day, we like to go on a stroll and grab lunch. Sometimes we will even look around the shops in Liverpool One.
13:00 After lunch, we will check in with our teams to see where we are up to with our tasks. This gives us an opportunity to discuss any queries or concerns about our current projects.
14:00 We attend a weekly ‘Culture Club’ where we can discuss with other members of staff ways to improve the culture within CEL Solicitors. We receive feedback from staff regarding upcoming events and activities. This is beneficial to both of our roles as we can raise concerns to the people team and adjust events where necessary.
15:00: To break up the day, we will enjoy a cup of coffee with a biscuit at our desks. We reflect on what we have achieved and will prepare tasks for the following day.
16:00: We complete any pending tasks to ensure a smooth operation for the upcoming day.
17:00: After a successful and busy day, it’s time to head home!
