Believe Housing tenant who suffers from asthma was forced to live with cracks, mould, and poor plastering despite contacting their landlord multiple times a year.
The 29-year-old mother of two, who preferred not to be named, informed her landlord of the disrepair shortly after moving into the property. Despite making several complaints, the tenant received no help at all.
The client wanted to redecorate her property when she first moved in, and after stripping down the wallpaper she was shocked to find that there were cracks all throughout the property.
The woman, who suffers from asthma, was forced to live in a property with poor plastering and defective doors and windows, which resulted in draughts throughout her home.
Due to this, the property was subsequently filled with mould and leaking.
Additionally, there were holes in the staircase which also had a loose bannister. This was of course, a massive health and safety hazard for her and her children.

It was only until the woman sought legal advice from CEL Solicitors that she was able to make progress with repairing her home. The client was assisted by CEL Solicitors’ specialist housing team who are experienced in securing repairs and compensation for social housing tenants struggling with their living conditions.
CEL Solicitors ordered a surveyor to assess the woman’s property. After receiving a surveyor’s report, Believe Housing then agreed to carry on the repairs on their tenant’s home which were over £3,000. CEL Solicitors also successfully secured £1,000 in compensation for the client.
Commenting on this, Melissa Moulsdale, a housing disrepair expert at CEL Solicitors, said:
“Laws are in place in this country to ensure that everyone lives in a property that is safe and in good condition.
This client’s case shows that unfortunately, this is not always the case, as thousands of tenants share the same experience.
We are delighted to have worked on this client’s behalf and fight for what is fair – her right to live in a safe and comfortable home with her children.”
